Army’s mobile satellite network enables rapid fire missionsFORT BLISS, Texas (Dec. 2, 2014) -- During the latest test of the Army's mobile tactical communications network, Warfighter Information Network-Tactical Increment 2, a field artillery battalion used the Soldier Network Extension to extend the range of their fire support operations to the tactical edge and significantly cut the length of time it takes to process their fires missions. The satellite-based Warfighter Information Network-Tactical, or WIN-T, Increment 2 SNE provides network communication and extension capabilities down to the company level. Read more ...
Mentoring program prepares future leadersREDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Dec. 12, 2014) -- A mentoring program to enhance both personal and professional growth has been established at the Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center. This center-sponsored program was created to unite a cross section of AMRDEC employees from different directorates including members located in other states. Objectives of The AMRDEC Mentoring Program are to foster the mentee's ability to improve leadership and technical skills, gain knowledge from other directorates and expand small group interaction and communication skills. Participation is on a volunteer basis and members will be eligible for Continuing Learning Points for each session hour, up to 16 hours. Read more ...
Picatinny lightens Soldiers’ load, shaves 12 pounds off mortar systemPICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (Dec. 10, 2014) -- Following the successful fielding of the lightweight 60mm mortar system, Picatinny has begun delivering the new lightweight 81mm system to troops. The new M252A1 81mm system is 12 pounds, or 14 percent, lighter than its predecessor, the legacy M252 mortar system. "The new lightweight system reduces the load for dismounted battalion mortar platoons, while retaining the same durability, rates of fire, and range of the legacy system," said Lt. Col. Will McDonough, Product Manager Guided Precision Munitions and Mortar Systems, known as GPM2S, with the Program Executive Office for Ammunition at Picatinny Arsenal. Picatinny engineers delivered the first 81mm M252A1 mortar systems to troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, earlier this month. Read more ...
Army engineer receives research scholars awardADELPHI, Md. (Dec. 10, 2014) -- In addition to hard work and dedication inside the laboratory to further the mission of discovering, innovating and transitioning science and technology to ensure dominate strategic land power, many U.S. Army Research Laboratory scientists and engineers provide significant support to programs that focus on the future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics research careers and the students who hope to one day fill those positions. ARL electronics engineer Dr. Adrienne Raglin is no exception, as she was recently recognized by the Dr. John H. Hopps Jr. Defense Research Scholars Program for her continuing support of the program and its scholars. Established in 2006, the Dr. John H. Hopps Jr. Defense Research Scholars Program is designed to advance federal objectives to increase minority participation in scientific research, in math and science education, and in emerging technological fields. Picatinny engineers win Army’s top research awardPICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (Dec. 4, 2014) -- Seventeen Picatinny Arsenal scientists and engineers have won the Army's top award for science and technology. The Army presents the Research and Development Achievement Award to a select group of scientists and engineers whose outstanding achievements have "significantly advanced capabilities and contributed to the national defense." The Picatinny awardees represent five different R&D programs. "Each year these awards recognize those scientists and engineers who have made a significant contribution to advance the Army's technical capability," said John Hedderich, III, acting director of Picatinny's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, or ARDEC. AMC commander: Army’s technology needs offer rewarding career opportunitiesPICATINNY ARSENAL, NJ (Dec. 8, 2014) -- Despite periods of uncertainty and budget constraints, the United States Army represents a tremendous opportunity for exciting and rewarding careers as the Army seeks to maintain its technology edge, the Army's top materiel officer said here recently. Gen. Dennis L. Via, Commander of the U.S. Army Materiel Command or AMC, made his remarks Dec. 1 during a visit that included the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness to ensure dominant land force capability for the U.S. warfighter and our allies. Natick helps develop containment system used against EbolaNATICK, Mass. (Nov. 26, 2014) -- A containment system used to quarantine Ebola virus patients being transported out of West Africa was developed with help from the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center. The Aeromedical Biological Containment System, or ABCS, manufactured by Production Products of St. Louis, can be hoisted into a specially modified Gulfstream III air ambulance and flown by Phoenix Air Group back to the U.S., or other countries, where patients can receive more intensive treatment. Several successful missions have already been conducted. "We've designed a lot of chem-bio defense systems for Soldiers, like those for the Deployable Medical Systems, but it's all been ground based," said Tom Larkham, an equipment specialist on the Fabric Structures Team of the Expeditionary Basing and Collective Protection Directorate at Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center. "There (were) a lot of things (with the ABCS) that had to be tested for that we had never really had any experience with." Read more ...
U.S. Army Research Laboratory establishes Postdoctoral AssociationABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (Dec. 2, 2014) -- The U.S. Army Research Laboratory Postdoctoral Association was recently established, marking a major step forward for postdoctoral training. The association is designed to enhance the postdoctoral experience at ARL by creating an inclusive environment where postdoctoral fellows can interact, build professional connections and develop career objectives. Jamie Lukos, founder and president of the ARL-PDA, said this effort was led by ARL's postdoctoral fellows in collaboration with Frederick Gregory, a program manager at the Army Research Office and Vallen Emery, Director of Outreach in the Office of the Director. ARDEC’s airburst round to begin evaluation this summerWASHINGTON (Army News Service, Dec. 8, 2014) -- The Small Arms Grenade Munition round -- a 40mm counter-defilade, air-bursting grenade designed for both the M203 and M320 launchers -- will undergo evaluation in July 2015. The SAGM round has been under development by the Joint Service Small Arms Program at the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, or JSSAP-ARDEC, since January 2012. If the SAGM round is successful in the demonstration, it will transition to Project Manager-Maneuver Ammunition Systems, or PM-MAS, by the end of fiscal year 2015 for integration into an official Army program of record.
